Understanding Ohio’s Online Driver Education Time Requirements

Ohio requires completion of a 24-Hour Online Classroom Instruction course before you can move forward in the licensing process. While there is no maximum time limit to complete the coursework, all requirements, including the Final Exam, must be finished within 180 days (6 months) from the date you begin.

State regulations limit students to 4 hours of training per calendar day, with a mandatory 15-minute break after every 2 hours of continuous study. The system will automatically log you out once these limits are reached.

Note: Only active Course Time (reading, watching videos, completing tests) counts toward Ohio's required 24 hours. Logging in without completing coursework will not increase your Course Time.

Behind-the-Wheel Training

After you complete the 24-Hour Ohio Online Driver Education course and pass the required Final Exam, you will receive your official Certificate of Completion.

Requirement for In-Car Lessons

This certificate is required before you can begin your 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed Ohio driving instructor.

Important: As an online course provider, we do not conduct in-car training. You must contact a driving school of your choice to schedule your lessons.

Finding a Driving School

To find a driving school approved by the Ohio Department of Public Safety (DPS), use the official Driver Education Training Schools (DETS) search tool.
